Officially Signed Up
It is official! My Ironman I.D. # is 96228. I don't know exactly what this means other than I now have a ton of swimming, biking and running that I need to do in order to make sure that I don't end up at the bottom of Lake Monona. I have always said that the road to the Ironman officially began for me three years ago when I did my first triathlon. I started out doing a bunch of local sprint triathlons (St. Peters Rec Plex, Ballwin, Wood River, The Babler Beast and Lake St. Louis). I graduated to Olympic Distance events with Quartermax and The Chicago Triathlon before attempting the 1/2 Ironman Distance (Vineman, KC Half Championships, Racine & Timberman). I threw in the Chicago and New York Marathons for good measure and now find myself at the begining to the final leg of my triathlon journey. The ironman is not something that you can just jump into - it requires a tremendous amount of training. More importantly, it requires the support of family and friends. I start down this road with the hope that I will be able to summon everything that it will take to complete this journey. I am not alone. I have a great training team and a phenomenal family. I will need everything and everyone if I am to cross the line in front of the Madison Capital before midnight next September. The journey is underway...Stay tuned!
Lewis & Clark Half Marathon
Just a quick 20 mile jaunt!!!We used the Lewis & Clark Half Marathon as a training run for the Marine Corps Marathon. Vic, Denlow, Lynn, Beth, Rosenthal, Pepper and I started at 545am and got seven miles in before crossing the starting line. When it was all said and done we had a 20 mile run under our belt. Weather was nice - a little humid but not too bad. The general consensus today was that an Ironman distance is a long, long way to go. This race also marked the start of the 50 marathons in 50 states that Dean Karnazes is attempting. You can check out his web log by clicking here.
Race Day
The race conditions were absolutely awful for the 2.4 mile swim, the 112 mile bike and the 26.2 mile run today in Madison. Rainy and cold for 14 straight hours. It was truly something to see. A long day for all involved, both spectators as well as participants. All three St. Louis competitors did great! Seeing the Ironman live was something that I will always remember. An unbelievable experience with conditions that were atrocious. I would like to think that I could have gotten through the race but I have some serious doubts. Man vs. the elements - the edge went to the elements today.
Road Trip - Ironman Wisconsin
Tommy, Pepper, Seiichi, Bill & I made the road trip to Madison, Wisconsin to cheer on Tom Irwin, Tom Stringer and Nancy Lieberman for IRONMAN WISCONSIN.
